The Legacy Complex Care Turning Bed

Legacy is a mechanical turning bed developed for the treatment of complex trauma, including multiple injuries, spinal, and spinal cord injuries and acute medical conditions.

With extensive input from specialist nursing and medical staff, its operation has been designed to reduce the physical strain for healthcare workers, as well as to preserve patient safety during turning, transfer and treatment.

Patients until now deemed “not for turning” can now be turned safely and comfortably – improving care without compromising their condition, injuring nursing staff or draining resources.

1. Mechanically turn and log-roll critically injured patients

Legacy’s unique dual mattress system, innovative “Embrace Hold” position and smooth lateral 30° tilt function secures patients completely, allowing even the most severely injured patients to be turned and rolled safely and without further trauma for all manner of checks and procedures.

2. Prevent avoidable multi-system complications

Routine turning reduces incidences of secondary complications such as pneumonia, constipation, urinary sepsis, thromboembolism, gastric ulceration and psychological stress. Legacy brings this enormous benefit to the complex care environment.

3. Eliminate pressure ulcers

The dual mattress system allows one mattress to slide over the other, transferring shear away from the patient. This, with regular turning, and the upper viscoelastic pressure-care mattress, dramatically reduces the risk of ulceration and infection.

4. Log-roll without staff strain or injury

With Legacy, even full patient log-rolls are strain-free. Nursing staff hold the patient steady while the bed turns. No pushing or pulling is required, and patient discomfort is kept to a minimum. Patients can safely and easily be held at 90° for as long as necessary to complete routine hygiene checks, care procedures and linen changes.

5. Save time and free-up labour – turn patients to 30° with a single operator

Turning and repositioning patients with cleared spines is now possible with a single member of the nursing team. Thanks to Legacy’s Embrace Hold position, nursing staff can ensure patients undergoing periods of acute bed rest are routinely turned at the appropriate intervals to redistribute pressure and reduce the duration of fluid stasis – saving precious time and resources and drastically improving patient care.

6. Easily manage patient nutrition, drug dosage and anaesthesia

Legacy’s built-in weighing system gives an accurate patient reading with the patient in any position and the bed at any angle of tilt, simplifying basic checks and aiding care decisions.

7. Maintain spinal alignment without compromising care

The reduction in shear, smooth turning/rolling and the viscoelastic properties of the mattress help to keep total spinal alignment.

8. Turn and re-position without removing traction

Legacy’s included spinal/skull and lower-limb traction system moves with the patient during turns, avoiding the need for constant re-alignment.<

9. Calm and comfort disturbed patients

The Embrace Hold has been observed to have a calming effect on disturbed patients (particularly those with brain injuries), helping them to feel safe and aiding their psychological recovery from trauma.

10. Improve prognosis and recovery times

By eliminating secondary complications and keeping focus on the primary cause of hospitalisation, patient outcomes improve, and the recovery period is quicker, improving through-put times.

Practice-based evidence:

Intensive evaluation in wide and varied hospital departments
has revealed Legacy‘s versatility as an asset for all manner
of complex care environments. Practice-based evidence
has included patient and professional experiences* in cases
including:

General intensive care:
Clinical consensus across 21 Critical Care Units suggests
that mechanical turning enabled patients to wean from
ventilator support on average 4 days earlier than
expected, expediting their long-term recovery and
discharge from intensive care. Meanwhile, it is suggested
that a number of patients have survived life-threatening
injuries due to the provision of mechanical turning.

Spinal Cord Injury:
The unique mattress system enhances a bed deemed fit
for purpose by five English SCI centres, whose prior
awareness of mechanical turning prompted a strong
appreciation of Legacy‘s unique features.

Spinal injuries without neurological compromise:
Three orthopaedic spinal surgery centres successfully
trialled Legacy for both the conservative and post-surgical
management of orthopaedic spinal injury patients, as
a means of eliminating the risk of developing an SCI
secondary to turning.

Acquired brain injury and neurosurgery:
Legacy enables the multi-positional rotation of the patient
over a number of axes, including lateral rotation to 30°,
head and leg elevation, reverse trendelenburg and
other functionalities that enhance therapeutic treatments.
This, alongside the Embrace Hold position, was found to
contribute to a reduction in stress and a smaller increase
in ICP compared to manual turning.

Complex Surgery:
Trials included various patients who had undergone
complex or reconstructive surgery, amputation and joint
replacement. Clinical staff confirmed that patient pain
and discomfort during routine turns/transfers was, in
their opinion, significantly reduced compared with
past experiences.

Multiple Trauma:
Positive evaluations highlighted the holistic benefits of
turning in three major Trauma Centres using Legacy for
patients not requiring spinal protection.

Pelvic injuries:
2 pelvic injury patients within a Major Trauma Centre
successfully trialled Legacy during both pre and
post-surgical periods, with a focus on minimising the
risk of pressure ulcers by enabling routine turning with
minimal discomfort.

Adult Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ARDS):
One critical care centre demonstrated that by positioning
a ventilated ARDS patient prone before turning in the
Embrace Hold position, they were able to avoid
transferring that patient for ECMO (Extra-Corporeal
Membrane Oxegenation) – saving approximately £25,000
in a single patient episode.

A presentation “open day” in a suitable side-room presents the ideal introduction to Legacy. Specialist advisors will demonstrate the bed’s functions, features and applications to clinicians and nursing professionals in a series of 15-20 minute sessions, allowing staff to attend throughout the day as their work routine permits.

Evaluate:

An on-ward clinical trial for a period of 1-2 weeks offers hospital departments the opportunity to assess Legacy in real clinical scenarios. Introductory training on bed features and usage is delivered as standard, and a range of guidance material is provided to ensure your teams get maximum benefit for the duration of the trial.

Further support is available from our specialist advisors, who will keep in contact throughout the trial, visiting where appropriate to talk to nursing staff, consultants, physiotherapists and patients in the bed – providing training on how to get the best from the product and familiarising staff with the exciting new features that Legacy offers in their area of practice.

Legacy can be procured in a number of ways:

  • Rental: ideal in cases where Legacy is required at short notice, and/or where budgetary restrictions preclude outright purchase. Rental also offers the flexibility to hire Legacy for the duration for which it is required and no more – saving money and space.
  • Lease purchase: through monthly payments over 3 or 5 years. This option enables full product ownership without the burden of a lump sum payment
